“Placing certain quotations together is like seating strangers around a dinner table; you can’t be sure where the conversation will lead. Sometimes the meaning of a quote changes simply because it occurs out of context. But it’s also true that certain words have a life of their own. Clear as a window, they allow us to see through them; reading them, we see what we need to see.” – Sy Syfransky, Introduction to Sunbeams: A Book of Quotations

Back in May 2011, an English teacher named Jessica Dovey posted an altered Martin Luther King Jr. quote to her Facebook status, unintentionally turning the quote into a misattributed internet phenomenon.

“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although this was adapted from a MLK quote placed out of context, the speed with which it spread throughout the internet attested to the power of quotation. How many times have you come across a quote worded in such a way that has affected you more than the author could have ever anticipated? Perhaps it was an idea or emotion that you thought was unique to you–written down in a book by someone else many years ago.

Quotations ultimately have the power to elicit a whole range of emotions and to connect us to the thoughts and feelings of individuals hundreds of years and miles apart. What’s your favorite quotation? Share in the comments below!

Derived from The Sun, the eminent monthly national literary magazine with a loyal readership of 70,000 people, Sunbeams features a selection of quotations for the aficionado of the form, the fan of the magazine, and anyone looking for an instant reminder of the beauty, power, and sheer complexity of the human spirit. Avoiding the familiar, the book contains pithy thoughts from a diverse group that includes James Baldwin, Mother Teresa, Friedrich Nietzsche, Rumi, and Victor Frankl, who survived the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Provocative and uplifting, the book respects both the glory and the heartache of being human.
