The March 8th fire that partially destroyed Chez Panisse was extinguished before it could do any lasting damage, but the restaurant will be closed for the month of March to repair the damage. While the momentary loss of Berkeley’s favorite slow foods bistro is mourned far and wide, the hole it has left in our hearts and bellies cannot remain empty forever. The following is a list of delicious Bay Area substitutes that will tide you over (if not convert you) until the famed restaurant returns.

  1. Gather
  2. Café Gratitude
  3. The Cheese Board
  4. Dona Tomas
  5. Ramen Shop
  6. Tacubaya
  7. Pizzaiolo
  8. Slow

Chez Panisse owner and activist Alice Waters is also the founder of the Edible Schoolyard Project, a slow foods movement aimed at enriching schools through community led gardening and cooking. To learn more, visit edibleschoolyard.org.
