WISDOM | 2012 Countdown Commences to Celebrate the Ending Mayan Calendar (Giveaway inside!)

What will transpire as the Mayan Long Count calendar draws to a close this December 21, 2012? Hollywood has popularized an end-of-the-world outlook with movies like 2012, but among 2012 experts like anthropologist Robert Sitler, biophysicist Dieter Broers and the late José Argüelles—“widely credited with focusing the popular imagination on the Mayan calendar” (The New York Times)—the coming winter solstice will not usher in the apocalypse, but instead bring forth the dawning of a new age.

Having a long-standing history of publishing books about Mayan cosmology and culture, North Atlantic Books is celebrating the positivist outlook of nearly 10 expert authors with a “2012 Countdown” this fall. The countdown will highlight one 2012 book a week from now until December 21 on NABCommunities.com, and give readers a once-weekly chance to enter to win a free 2012 book of their choice just for signing up for a free NABCommunities membership (see entry form below). Members have access to North Atlantic’s regular podcasts, webinars, advance excerpts and events—all of which will get a dose of 2012-flavor as we approach the new era.

We will also continue to post updates on authors like Robert Sitler, a Stetson University professor who’s been featured on NPR and in the pages of Time magazine, as they continue to make media appearances to discuss the western world’s fascination with the 2012 phenomenon.
