CULTURE | Can You Write 31 Plays in 31 Days?

On August 1st, the 31 Plays in 31 Days Project was launched, challenging participants from all over the world to write an original play every day for the month of August. The project attracted over 400 playwrights as of August 1st and is expected to grow over the course of the month.

Participating writers who complete the August challenge will be invited to submit their work for the 31 Plays in 31 Days online staged reading. My fellow program organizers Tracy Held Potter, Chelsey Little, and I post daily blogs about the writing process, interviews with featured participating playwrights, and prompts to inspire writers.

Nike’s slogan is, “Just Do It.” I think writers need something like that, I know I do. I can think of a hundred different excuses in a day to not write; we’re hoping to take the excuses away from people.

“We’re really trying to challenge people to push themselves this month,” my fellow co-founder, Tracy Held Potter says. “We don’t need the plays to be ‘good’ at this point. We just want to encourage people to write and get past that first hurdle of putting a thought on a page.”

Writers of all skill levels are encouraged to register at any time during the month of August.
