As Occupy protests around the world continue to receive a cold, if not dismissive reception from many lawmakers, the question in the back of most people’s minds, whether they support or decry the Occupy movement, is where do we go from here?
To author Darrin Drda, the Occupy movement comes as a result of a full-scale crisis of consciousness; if it’s hard to find a pure set of demands from the Occupy movement, it’s because we are still identifying the list of problems and their often-concealed roots. In his timely new book, The Four Global Truths: Awakening to the Peril and Promise of Our Times, Drda uses the Buddhist principle of the Four Noble Truths to identify the sources of global suffering in the world and even attempt to find healing solutions.
Tomorrow night, Darrin Drda — who has protested with both Occupy San Francisco and Occupy Oakland — will be speaking on a panel called “Occupy the Future,” hosted by the Evolver Social Movement and Occupy San Francisco in Justin Herman Plaza at 7 pm. Panelists include Drda, North Atlantic Books Associate Publisher and Transition Albany leader Doug Reil, and CIIS Professor Emeritus David Ulansey, with other speakers to be announced. Watch Darrin talk about the need for a global revolution for consciousness in the video, “Occupy Origins: From Burning Man to Wall St” below.
This month, 40+ Spores in the Evolver Social Movement will take the worldwide Occupy movement as our jumping off point to define the operating system upgrade that can install “Civilization 2.0″: What types of social and economic systems would eliminate inequity, support sustainable practices, and allow for collaborative decision-making or direct democracy? Would such a movement be only political, or would it also need to incorporate a spiritual dimension? We will also consider practical next steps for the movement, as well as methods for enlisting the remaining 1% to join the cause. Spores may host (R)evolution 101 Training, workshops on knowing your legal rights, consensus decision making, successful protest strategies, talks on the history of anarchism and socialism, media messaging, outreach methods, and more.
