In 2004, it was estimated that 13.4 million Americans practiced yoga. So it’s hard to believe that a mere seven years later, the number of practitioners in the U.S. alone has sky rocketed to an astonishing 30 million people. Yoga has now become the most powerful and widespread sacred physical practice available to the world. With the momentum of yoga’s popularity, the amount of literature on the subject has also increased. However, one influential book has gotten people’s attention.
Heart Yoga: The Sacred Marriage of Yoga and Mysticism by Andrew Harvey and Karuna Erickson has been endorsed by many of the world’s greatest spiritual and yoga gurus as the essential next step for the international yoga movement. Heart Yoga offers a unique transformative combination of poetry, meditations, and yoga postures suitable for anyone from beginners to experts. This fusion creates the sacred marriage of transcendence and presence, heart and mind, body and soul, deep peace and sacred action. This sacred marriage births 5 great joys: The joy of Transcendence, Creation, Love for all beings, The Tenderness of Tantra, and the Joy of Service. Erickson and Harvey have worked for many years to develop inspiring yoga sequences for each joy, so that they can be directly experienced in the body, mind, and heart.
“Heart Yoga offers, at these chaotic and difficult times, the union of grounded passion and peaceful joy in the core of the body and heart that everyone needs to keep strong, creative, and inspired love…We need the ancient practices and wisdom of yoga to sustain, inspire, and encourage us to respond in healing ways to the many world crises.” – From the book.
When Karuna Erickson and Andrew Harvey first met, Erickson inspired Harvey to embrace the power of yoga, so that his mind, spirit, and body could become truly aligned. The result of her encouragement was the solution Harvey had been looking for for his debilitating back pain and ongoing weight issues. Since then, Andrew Harvey has become the founder and director of the Institute for Sacred Activism while Karuna Erickson directs the Heart Yoga Center as she continues to practice and teach yoga.
