When news of visionary leader José Argüelles‘ passing spread around the world in March of this year, it came as no surprise that people flocked to the internet to remember the father of the Harmonic Convergence. The New York Times wrote a dedicated obituary on Argüelles, as did the LA Times, and while the major publications certainly circulated far and wide, it was really the bloggers — many of whom have been personally touched by the work and spirit of Argüelles over the years — who seemed to remember him best. In honor of the recent ebook release of Argüelles’ final work, Manifesto for the Noosphere, we thought we’d share some of the outpouring of love and remembrance that has appeared around the ‘net in tribute to the author’s life work.
From Alan Steinfeld on NewRealities:
“Remembering the Man of the Future: Jose Argüelles started it all (1939-2011)”
“While the mania about what will happen in 2012 builds to a feverish pitch, the man who started it all is gone. Jose Argüelles, the person who first brought the prophesies of the Mayan end date passed over on March 23rd, 2011, after a short illness. He will be remembered as a visionary and person who changed the course of contemporary history with insights into the movement of human consciousness.
In 1987 he skyrocketed to popularity and helped ignited the heart of the America’s spiritual subculture with his book the Mayan Factor. It was here he specifically stated that the Mayan said their long year will end on December 21st 2012…Arguelles promised it would be “the ending of time as we know it.”
While many are now say this is an end of the world scenario, Arguelles himself was clear in stating that it was not the end of civilization, but merely the completion of “the myth of progress”. He felt that our ego-centered materialistic based culture would give way, and a time of art, creativity and harmony would be allowed to flourish.” Read more here
From Elizabeth Whitney on Reality Sandwich:
“‘Everything is Perfect. Love Everyone. Hate No One.’ (Jose Arguelles’ words as he left this dimension)”
“When I learned that Jose Arguelles had died an image came into my mind of a move on a chess board — the L-shaped move the knight makes in two directions at the same time, leaping over pieces and seeming to land out of nowhere. To me, Jose had leaped into another dimension, a shock but no surprise. “He will now be assisting us from the other side of the veil,” were the words that accompanied the news from Australia from his partner, Stephanie South. The specifics of his death were simple. On March 23 (Red Spectral Moon), “He slipped away in complete peace after a short illness.”
Among his last public communications were lectures to two conferences in 2010, one in Germany and one in Kazakhstan, that he had planned to attend in person but instead chose to do so via videotape. In each case he described his decision to withdraw from public appearances until after December 21, 2012, and delve more deeply into meditation. He explained to the participants, ‘I saw that my responsibility was to continue to go within to cultivate higher states of mind, states of mind that will approximate the noosphere, that would activate my capacity for telepathy.’” Read more here
From Robert Wilkinson on Aquarius Papers:
“Just over three weeks ago we lost one of the most distinguished Beings of the 20th Century. He opened “doors of perception” that changed our world forever. Without his work, very few today would have speculated about the relative importance of the year 2012.
Most “cultural creatives” have heard of the great Jose Arguelles, who died on March 23. He was one of the originators of the Harmonic Convergence (the mid-August 1987 Grand Fire Trine), the Whole Earth festival, and the Dreamspell game where he introduced the 13 Moon/28 Day Calendar. He was a world-renowned author, artist, visionary and educator who also founded Planet Art Network and the Foundation for the Law of Time.
He introduced humanity to a new way of measuring time and a new way of regarding reality, especially the fast paced events of the years we’re currently experiencing.” Read more here
Manifesto for the Noosphere is released under our new EVOLVER EDITIONS imprint, in collaboration with Evolver LLC — the folks behind social network Evolver.net and web magazine RealitySandwich.com. In this landmark entry in the new EVOLVER EDITIONS Manifesto series, Argüelles brings in the Mayan long-count calendar, radical theories on the nature of time, advanced states of consciousness, and more as he carefully details the role of the noosphere — the sphere of thought and consciousness — in the evolution of civilization. The author predicts that the noosphere will be fully accessed on December 21, 2012—but warns that we will only successfully make this evolutionary jump through an act of collective consciousness among humans on Earth. The ascension to the noosphere or Supermind (using the terminology of Sri Aurobindo), Argüelles says, will be an unprecedented “mind shift” that mirrors the emergence of life itself on the planet.
The ebook edition of this book was released in May 2011 in tribute to the late author. A paperback, pocket-sized edition will be available September 6, 2011 wherever books are sold (preorder a first-print copy now!). Or, read an excerpt of Manifesto of the Noosphere on Realitysandwich.com now!
