Welcome to Lucy Harmer’s Shamanic Astrology monthly forecast for the Northern Hemisphere! Each month Lucy shares inspiration and ideas for the coming weeks from her book Shamanic Astrology: Understanding Your Spirit Animal Sign.
Shamanic Astrology is based on the study of the movement of the sun and the moon during the different seasons of the year. There are twelve astrological “signs” which are represented by twelve different spirit animals. To find out your own personal spirit animal sign (the sign you were born under), please check the table of spirit animals at the end of this article. Shamanic Astrology teaches us that inner power derives from knowing the properties, characteristics, and qualities of each spirit animal (known as their “medicine”), and applying this in our own lives.
Each month I will focus on the spirit animal for that month, and describe the “energy” of the month itself and also the influence of the moon. I will also indicate which other spirit animal signs will find this month to be particularly beneficial, and why.
September 23 – October 22: RAVEN
Month of the dead leaves
Spirit Animal Sign of the Month:
Raven is the spirit animal which corresponds to September 23 – October 22 (in the northern hemisphere). If you were born at this time, your spirit animal sign is Raven and you share Raven’s strengths of being idealistic, intuitive, romantic, calm, peaceful, diplomatic, charming and easy to live with. You may also share some of Raven’s weaknesses and can have a tendency to be indecisive, moody, naïve and easily influenced.
Medicine: Raven’s medicine is the ability to appreciate the magic in simple things and to open your heart to the many possibilities that life offers. To be used when bored with a routine and unrewarding situation.
Element: Air
Stone: Azurite
Color: Blue
Plant: Ivy
Energy of the season:
Raven’s month is that of the dead leaves. As the leaves fall from the trees, autumn is well under way. This month starts just after the autumn equinox; the nights begin to lengthen and nature prepares itself to rest during the cold days to come. Most animals at this time begin preparing for winter. The energy of this month is beneficial for focusing inward; it is a time for developing inner resources that will help us to face external challenges in the months to come. Before winter really sets in, nature ends its first cycle with a fabulous carpet of multicolored leaves. Everything that is undertaken during the month of Raven will be contradictory and will call for harmony, balance and justice. It is an excellent period for evaluating situations and taking time before making decisions.
Energy of the moon:
The month of Raven starts with its full moon on September 23. The first half of Raven’s month will be spent trying to gain a certain sense of harmony, justice and balance in possibly conflicting situations; make sure you evaluate situations carefully before making important decisions. There may be a desire to ‘escape,’ to regain a sense of freedom at this time. The second half of Raven’s month is ruled by Snake, with the Snake new moon on October 7. The influence of this moon will dominate Raven’s month until October 22, bringing about a great deal of transformation. This is a great time for understanding past decisions and events, for exploring emotions, sensuality and your own spiritual nature. It is an ideal time for taking stock of the things that really matter in your life; to learn how to let go and move into new dynamics in every aspect of your existence.
This month is particularly favorable for the following signs:
Raven:
If your sign is Raven the energy of this month is very favorable because it corresponds to the month and the moon of your birth. A new cycle is about to start in your life and this is the best time to start planting seeds. Use the sun’s energy to take stock and head off in a new direction.
Deer/Otter:
If your sign is Deer or Otter this is a very lucky month for you, with lots of harmony because you are in your own air element. A multitude of opportunities will open up for you in this period and this is the best time to give destiny a helping hand!
Salmon/Owl:
For Salmon and Wolf people, this is a very dynamic month, full of energy which favors the conception and birth of new projects. You will feel new motivation and a renewal of your energy at this time.
Table of Spirit Animal Signs:
To find your spirit animal sign, just locate your birthday from the dates below, according to your place of birth. If you were born north of the equator (e.g., USA, Canada, Europe), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Northern Hemisphere.” If you were born south of the equator (e.g., Australia, New Zealand, South Africa), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Southern Hemisphere.”
