Cecil Brown with Film Director Michael Moore holding Brown's award-winning book, Dude, Where's My Black Studies Department?
Famed and celebrated author, Cecil Brown continuously amazes readers with his controversial and thought-provoking works dealing with race and class issues. Dr. Brown holds a B.A. from Columbia University, a M.A. from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, where he has appeared as a guest lecturer. He has lectured at multiple California college campuses, and received the 2008 PEN Oakland Josephine Miles National Literary Award for his groundbreaking title, Dude, Where’s My Black Studies Department? The Disappearance of Black Americans from U.S. Universities. Over the years, Dr. Brown has made a career as a novelist, screenwriter, and a scholar creating many published works including The Life and Loves of Mr. Jiveass Nigger, I, Stagolee, and many more.
Unafraid of making a splash in the literary world, Dr. Brown takes on controversial issues with no hesitation to speak his mind. In Dude, Where’s My Black Studies Department?, Dr. Brown discusses the phenomenon of vanishing black students from college campuses, and their reappearance in prisons, videos, and movies. Brown explains that college educators fail to capture the oral tradition of African-American culture, leaving the students feeling isolated and left out. In his novel, Brown discusses the detrimental effects of this isolation and offers readers a possible plan for reform to change this often ignored issue in contemporary society.
