In the tradition of Quantum Healing and Guns, Germs and Steel, Philip Shepherd’s New Self, New World makes an intellectual inquiry into how we might restore freedom, creativity, and a sense of presence in the moment by rejecting several fundamental myths about being human. Through a series of readings and hands-on exercises, the book offers a roadmap to getting emotionally and spiritually “unstuck” and finding our true state of consciousness.
Shepherd has traveled the world, culminating in New Self, New World. He undertook four years of training with Denis Chagnon, a pioneer in energy work. He wrote two internationally produced plays and a documentary for CBC television; he trained in Butoh dance and toured Canada in The Conference of the Birds; he edited a book of art criticism, The Compleat Art Critic, and played lead roles in theater productions in Toronto, New York, Chicago, London, and Hong Kong.
Based on his travels and training, Shepherd is uniquely equipped to ask questions about the nature of art and creativity, about East/West differences in how the body is experienced, about what enables someone to freely express their humanity, and about how underlying cultural patterns and assumptions shape the way we think.
