When Gloucester resident and noted poet Patrick Doud set out to pen his first novel, the young adult fantasy The Hunt for the Eye of Ogin, he knew that he wanted to write a story that hit closer to home. A fantasy fan since his youth, Doud has created his own magical New England tale, opening the story in young Elwood Pitch’s new home in Boston, and loosely basing the book’s magical land of Winnitok on the region’s rich natural and political history. The first in Doud’s new series, The Winnitok Tales, The Hunt for the Eye of Ogin offers readers a truly epic American tale that readers of all ages will enjoy.
In his new home in Boston, Elwood is the new kid, the loner, who wishes nothing more than to move back to his previous country home with all of his friends. Upon entering the land Winnitok, however, Elwood discovers that though he believes himself a stranger, his presence comes with grave importance, having been summoned by the land’s missing immortal protector, Granashan the Nohar. A vision granted to Elwood with the bite of a magical plum reveals his grave mission: recover the eye of Ogin, a sacred shell with powers to reveal Granashan’s secret location, and restore peace to a troubled land. With the help of his new friend, the beautiful young warrior Drallah, and her trusty talking raven companion Booj, he braves quicksand and monsters, survives deadly poison ivy, and battles demons and kings, in search of Granashan the Nohar. As he trudges through a treacherous swamp where the eye of Ogin is buried, Elwood uncovers a gut-wrenching secret about his ties to the world of Ehm, and his real distance from the world he previously knew as home.
